Our Process

Rigorous by design. Urgent by necessity.

Breakthrough10 seeks to identify the highest-leverage opportunities in nonsurgical sterilization R&D and direct both hands on support and philanthropic capital where it can move the needle as fast and wide as possible.

The gap between existing science and a deployable nonsurgical sterilant is not a mystery. It is a pipeline problem — one that requires patient, strategic capital and a clear-eyed view of where the bottlenecks are. Our process is built around that reality.

Our team works closely with scientists, research institutions, and technical experts around the world providing funding, coordination, and strategic support to advance technologies that might otherwise struggle to attract traditional research or commercial investment. We emphasize scientific rigor, flexibility, and accountability — allowing research priorities and resources to evolve as evidence emerges.

Our objective is not simply to fund research, but to help move promising science towards safe, effective, affordable,
and scalable solutions.

Our Principles

What guides every decision.

Evidence over advocacy

We follow the science. Funding decisions are grounded in deep seated research, regulatory precedent, and field data — not sentiment or institutional loyalty.

Scale as the standard

A solution that works only in well-resourced veterinary settings and will not be very cheap is not a solution to the global companion animal crisis. Every candidate we evaluate is assessed for its potential to reach populations at scale.

Transparency with funders

Philanthropic capital deserves honest reporting. We share what is working, what is not, and where the field is moving — so funders can make informed decisions about where their resources have the most impact.

The Roadmap

From proof of concept to market.

The pathway from existing science to a deployable companion animal product is well understood. What it requires is not a scientific breakthrough from scratch — it requires sustained, patient capital to move through a known development pipeline.

Years 1–2
$500k–$5M

Candidate Identification & Optimization

Screen and optimize existing immunocontraceptive platforms (PZP, GnRH, novel antigens) for efficacy and safety in cats and dogs. Identify the most promising candidates for further development. This stage builds upon decades of existing research — it is not starting from zero. Continue to assess other potential candidates.

Years 2–4
$5M–$15M

Preclinical Development & Safety

Conduct preclinical studies to establish safety profiles, dosing parameters, and duration of effect. Develop manufacturing processes and formulations suitable for field deployment — including oral delivery mechanisms for free-roaming populations where capture is impractical.

Years 4–6
$15M–$35M

Clinical Trials & Regulatory Pathway

Conduct field trials in controlled companion animal populations. Engage with the USDA Center for Veterinary Biologics (CVB) and EPA on the regulatory pathway. The GonaCon precedent provides a roadmap for regulatory approval of immunocontraceptive products for free-ranging animals.

Years 6–7
$35M-$50M+

Scale Manufacturing & Global Deployment

Build manufacturing capacity and distribution networks for global deployment. Partner with international animal welfare organizations, governments, and veterinary networks to ensure the product reaches the populations where it is most needed — including low-resource settings where surgical sterilization is not viable.
